Bad Ischl

The European Capital of Culture Bad Ischl Salzkammergut 2024 - a region in transformation: On January 20, 2024, the first of three European Capitals of Culture 2024 will open in Bad Ischl. Soon to be followed by Tartu in Estonia and Bodø in Norway. Residents and guests from 23 municipalities and two federal states in the rural Alpine region will be offered a brilliant cultural program with over 300 events and numerous projects. Unique experiences and unforgettable adventures will provide an opportunity to share, question and hopefully expand the well-kept characteristics, traditions and perspectives of the Salzkammergut region. The common is placed above the divisive to help create an open and inclusive atmosphere for reflection and exchange.

The European Capital of Culture region will thus become a place of encounter and dialog where residents can shape their future within Europe and the world together. Above all, content from art and culture should help to bridge rifts that have been opened up and possibly make the Salzkammergut a role model for a united Europe that must reposition itself in order to meet the challenges of tomorrow. A model region that proves that cultural differences are an enrichment for living together.

The artistic vision of Bad Ischl Salzkammergut 2024 is to translate the tradition of salt and water, which the region established thousands of years ago and integrated into Europe, into an inspiring and appealing artistic concept. The philosophy of the Capital of Culture is based on four program lines with which new impulses are to be set and the diversity of historically rooted and contemporary art and culture is to be brought before the curtain.

POWER AND TRADITION
CULTURE IN FLUX
SHARING SALZKAMMERGUT - THE ART OF TRAVELING
GLOBALOKAL - BUILDING THE NEW

The subsequent program is an examination of the region, its history, its present, its perspectives and visions for the future and explores its relationship to Europe and the world. Networks are developed and expanded through art and culture, both regionally and internationally.

Around 180 projects that have already been fixed - more than 85% of them carried out by local and regional project promoters such as artists, associations, institutions and companies and over 70 reference projects by external institutions or individuals, the content of which is adapted to the program lines of the Capital of Culture Bad Ischl Salzkammergut 2024, show the diverse cultural energies of the regions of the Salzkammergut, even beyond the borders of the federal states. Reference projects in particular have an impact beyond the 23 Capital of Culture municipalities and are particularly worthy of support due to their thematic focus and public impact.
