The beautiful Alishan region in central Taiwan enchants visitors with spectacular sunrises, mystical forests, a historic train and the famous high mountain tea. Especially in spring, tea connoisseurs feel like they are in paradise here.

A visit to a tea plantation is one of the absolute highlights in Alishan, one of the most beautiful regions in Taiwan. The location at 1,000 to 1,600 meters above sea level offers ideal conditions for cultivation. The mineral-rich soil, the cool climate and the daily temperature fluctuations promote the growth of the tea plants, which are characterized by a particularly flowery taste. In spring, at the beginning of April during the Ching Ming Festival, the harvest season begins and lasts until the end of May. This is when the tea gardens fill up with hard-working tea pickers who carefully harvest the delicate tea leaves by hand. According to legend, the spring gods make the tea plants sprout and the scent of fresh tea permeates the air. The Alishan region is home to more than 2,000 hectares of tea plantations, one of the most famous places being the village of Longyan, the cradle of Taiwanese high mountain tea. In 1976, farmer Yunfa Lin began cultivating tea and laid the foundation for the "golden age" of high mountain tea in Taiwan. Today, his children are continuing the tradition. The harvested tea leaves are first fermented, each step requiring precision and experience. The special anaerobic fermentation process used in Longyan gives the tea its unmistakable aroma.

In addition to tea, the Alishan region has many other highlights to offer. An absolute must is a ride on the historic Alishan Forest Railway, which winds its way through the dense forests and steep mountain slopes in tight curves. The railroad was originally built to transport timber and today offers one of the most picturesque train rides in the world. Another highlight is the sunrise over the sea of clouds, which can be enjoyed in the Alishan National Scenic Area. Early risers are rewarded with a view that is one of the most beautiful in the whole of Taiwan. The moment when the first rays of sunlight bathe Jade Mountain and the tea plantations in golden light is breathtaking. Afterwards, you can use the day for an extended hike. Numerous paths lead through subtropical forests, past centuries-old bamboo groves. The Alishan National Scenic Area is divided into three areas: North, Central and South. The North is the quietest of the three areas, a region of steeply sloping tea plantations, scenic heritage trails, rushing waterfalls, indigenous culture and much more. Those who come here should not miss a detour to the pretty village of Taiping. The winding Taiping Old Street is paved with red brick, and the historic houses feature traditional red brick walls, wooden windows and wooden doors. The street offers a wide range of specialties from local agriculture and old Taiwanese cuisine. Many shop windows feature stained wood paneling, including some chic cafés where you can take a leisurely break during a day of sightseeing. What should you definitely order? A cup of tea, of course!
