Kempinski Grand Hotel Des Bains: First choice for Lindsey Vonn and all passionate skiers
Lindsey Vonn is electrifying the ski racing scene once again. The American speed queen made a brilliant comeback to the Ski World Cup in St. Moritz in December at the age of 40 with a patched-up knee. The Olympic and world champion stayed at the Kempinski Grand Hotel Des Bains in the Engadine resort, as she has done many times before. A sporty luxury hotel that, in my opinion, suits Lindsey Vonn and all passionate winter sports enthusiasts well.
The Grand Hotel Des Bains is not only located directly on the beautiful Hahnensee run, which leads from the Corvatsch glacier to St. Moritz Bad. It is also just a few steps from the imposing hotel to the downhill run and gondola lift of the Corviglia ski area on the other side of the valley, where Vonn skied to a magnificent 14th place in her comeback Super G. The sunny ski slopes of the Corviglia on one side and the snow-sure glacier pistes of the Corvatsch on the other - no other luxury hotel in St. Moritz offers a location like this. For a passionate skier like me, the Kempinski is therefore always the first choice in St. Moritz.
The ski-in ski-out location is one of the hotel's strengths for me, but certainly not the only one: the backdrop of the Grand Hotel Des Bains may be 150 years old, but at its heart the hotel seems young to me. The Kempinski has just injected new life into the St. Moritz party scene, which once made jetsetter Gunter Sachs legendary. His exclusive Dracula Club still exists. But it is usually only accessible to members.
The latest party hotspot in the Graubünden resort, on the other hand, is open to everyone: Kempinski has brought the Billionaire to St. Moritz, the iconic brand of Formula 1 legend Flavio Briatore. In its new club, Kempinski combines dinner, show and party. "Guests can expect an incomparable interplay of exquisite cuisine, captivating live shows and top-class clubbing - and thus a highlight of social life in St. Moritz," hotel director Zeuke told me.
For the Kempinski, the Billionaire is an excellent addition to the dignified lobby bar, which is perfect as a backdrop for a stylish high tea après-ski, but in my opinion does not work as a party location.
In contrast, the culinary concept of the Kempinski in St. Moritz works perfectly. The Cà d'Oro, which has been awarded a Michelin star, impresses more than just me. Leopold Ott cooks there in winter. In summer, the Austrian is sous-chef to Michelin-starred chef Mattias Roock, who has been based at the Castello del Sole in Ascona on Lake Maggiore for many years. Previously, Roock himself cooked with great success at the Kempinski in St. Moritz.
A lot has happened at the Kempinski since Roock's time in the Engadine. Most recently, numerous rooms and suites were refurbished in a modern Alpine style with lots of wood and warm natural tones. But nostalgics can rest assured: in the main wing of the Kempinski, which is dominated by two mighty domed towers, there are still some suites in the hotel's traditional style.
