We're back after a short break with episode 5. This week, Kiki takes us to Bali. We dive into a magical place with spiritual depth. But first we fly over the tops of the volcanoes, so to speak, to the rice fields and beaches of the Indonesian island, whose population lives according to a unique manifestation of Hinduism. This is in contrast to the rest of Indonesia with its 17,000 islands, where most people follow Islam. We briefly delve into the history (from 4:27) and learn what the geography of Bali has to do with a left shoe sole placed crosswise (from 8:27). A few facts about the population and tourism follow (from 13:57), before we turn our attention to Kiki's almost four-decade-long intensive relationship with Bali (from 15:58). Thanks to her research for reports and travel guides, Kiki has gained a deep insight into the fascinating world of the Balinese like few foreign visitors to the island. In the fifth episode of Logbuch, we also take a look at the development over the last 40 years.

Kiki tells us
what she has in common with Mick Jagger and why it was down to both of them that traditional Balinese weddings were taboo for non-Hindus for years. But above all, spiritual Bali plays the main role in our conversation. Kiki takes us into the fabulous world of temples and festivals and relives her emotional experience at a village performance of the Barong drama (from 30:24). Of course, as in every episode, we make a foray into the culinary scene, looking specifically at the social aspect of rice cultivation as well as the importance of food itself (from 52:40). Anyone who has never heard of Kopi Luwak will learn what the most expensive coffee in the world is all about. Is Bali a paradise or not? There are two sides to everything, including the island of Bali. Overtourism, traffic and dealing with garbage are among the negative components (from 1:10). To conclude Logbook #5, Kiki reports on the Balinese New Year festival Nyepi, a very special day for tourists too, because they are urged not to leave their accommodation. Enjoy the new episode.
