Every year again: the new Berlitz Cruise Guide is here ...
It is regarded as the "bible for all cruisers" and has maneuvered many a ship into rough waters - even if only in terms of image.
Who are we talking about? The annual "Berlitz Cruising & Cruise Ships Guide", the 2017 edition of which has just been published. Douglas Ward is the man behind the guide - and if you've ever experienced him on a ship, you'll probably form your own opinion of the Berlitz ship tests ... According to Mr. Ward, he spends more than half the year on cruise liners. So it's no wonder that he is as well known as a colorful seal on the world's oceans - and that he is courted accordingly. I myself sailed across the Atlantic with Mr. Ward on the QE2 many years ago - and I swear: if the real Queen Elizabeth had been on board back then, the crew would probably only have paid her half as much attention as Douglas, the not-so-secret ruler of all the oceans ...
Would you still like to know who is flying the bow flag this year? Best ships in the world - for the 17th and fourth time in a row: the "Europa" and the "Europa 2" from Hapag Lloyd. Winner in the category "Ships with more than 2,501 passengers": the "Queen Mary 2" ahead of the "Mein Schiff 5" and the "Mein Schiff 4". Also on the podium in various categories: "Viking Sea", "Viking Star", "Crystal Serenity", Silver Spirit" and the mega yachts "SeaDream I" and "SeaDream II".
But as is the case with bibles, it's all a matter of faith ...
