(M)a journey across the Atlantic

Just in time for the start of this year's transatlantic summer season, Cunard presents an atmospheric video interview with its CEO Micky Arison.

In it, the probably most powerful man in the cruise business tells how he himself emigrated to America as a young boy with his family on board the Mauretania in the 1950s, how he watched the big ocean liners on the Hudson River during his school days in New York and how his daughter and the Hollywood movie Titanic ultimately inspired him to build the extremely successful Queen Mary 2.

Today, the Queen Mary 2 is the only ship to cross the Atlantic on a scheduled service. This year, the "Queen of the Seas" will sail 22 times between the Old and New Worlds - a wonderfully relaxing pleasure that Arison says belongs on every "things to do once in a lifetime" list. He's right. Although I think "at least once" would be a little more accurate. After all, on Wednesday, almost 25 years after my first transatlantic crossing on board the legendary predecessor ship, the QE2, I will be making my way from Southampton to New York again. There will be more about this here on the blog in June and later in one of the printed editions of Connoisseur Circle.

But first, the interview with Micky Arison - to look forward to, daydream about and make your own transatlantic plans: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nct8MtJ88AM
