Constant hunger on the high seas is still one of the few phenomena still completely unexplored by science.

Just like the natural phenomenon of the supermarket checkout queue, for example: if you look at it from the fruit section or the chiller cabinet, it is small and inconspicuous. But if you approach it with the intention of paying, it suddenly grows to many times its normal length and also suffers from acute receipt roll congestion and/or protracted change shortages...

But back to the cruise ship, where the average passenger usually can't make it 20 meters without having to stop at a buffet or restaurant. The problem with this is that obviously only very few sea travelers know how small the big sea appetite actually is. Or how else could it be explained that most plates are usually cleared half full ...

What happens to the remnants of so much human hubris or a pronounced "after all, I paid for it" mentality? At best, they have so far been shredded, pressed and then thrown overboard as fish food.

At least Costa Crociere has recognized that responsibility and sustainability work differently. The Italians are the first shipping company in the world to rely on their sophisticated "4GoodFood" program. And that means: on the one hand, the menus have been changed so that food requirements can be better calculated in advance and therefore less food has to be thrown away. And secondly, any dishes that are not used are brought ashore at the next port and donated. To this end, Costa Crociere works closely with Banco Alimentare (the equivalent of the "Tafel" in German-speaking countries). More than 30,000 meals have already been distributed to those in need in the ports of Savonna and Civitavecchia. Further destinations throughout Europe are to follow.

And what is your favorite shipping company doing to reduce food waste? The best thing to do is to simply ask on your next cruise. For example, in the queue in front of the lunch buffet, which is closely related to the supermarket checkout queue and often shows the same symptoms when you approach it...
