It's getting crowded in the Antarctic. Whether Hurtigruten, Ponant, Hapag Lloyd or Oceanwide Expeditions: several shipping companies are launching new expedition ships in 2019.

And they will all arrive in Antarctica during the European winter. A curse or a blessing? It always depends on who you ask. While environmentalists are increasingly noticing that agreed minimum distances to the animals living there are not being observed on shore excursions and the odd black oil slick has already been spotted in the otherwise bright blue ice water, tour operators would much rather rave about the ever-growing interest in the region instead ... The latest figures from the International Association of Antartica Tour Operators speak for themselves: around 44,300 tourists visited the icy end of the world in the 2016/17 Antarctic season - already 15% more than in the previous year.
What is particularly worrying is that, due to its popularity, more and more large ships are approaching that are not sufficiently equipped for the extreme weather conditions in the region.
It is up to us to put an end to the excesses in the race towards Antarctica. So let's go and see penguins at the zoo again for a change - and if the longing for icebergs and snowstorms still won't let us go, then we should at least be careful who we set off south with...
