Travel Diary: From St. Maarten to Barbados

At dawn, the Seadream I approaches the island's capital Gustavia - and even at this time of day, only finds a free anchorage in the harbor entrance with great difficulty. The reason for the crowd: the "Bucket Regatta", one of the most exclusive sailing boat races in the world. Right next to us, the "A", a 119-metre-long mega yacht designed by Philippe Starck, is moored. The other ships in the area are also impressive. A little later, our tender boat glides like a water flea between all the floating palaces towards the mainland.

The boutiques of Vilebrequin, Louis Vuiiton, Hermès and Cartier are just opposite the mooring. But we are drawn to the other side of the island, to the Cheval Blanc, the hotel with the most beautiful beach and supposedly the finest beach club in the whole of St Barth. We pay just under 150 euros (light lunch included) for a day on the beach. A real mid-season bargain on the legendary luxury island that seems to magically attract the rich and famous.

Back on the Seadream I, the sundowner champagne and the friendly smiles of the crew members are free of charge. Some things you just can't buy because they are simply priceless, like our box seat at sea today ...
