Every year, just in time for the end of summer, I'm gripped by the great sea (n)addiction. That's when all the Atlantic crossings start, from Monte Carlo to Miami, from Barcelona to Barbados or from Palma to Palm Beach.

The last stop in Europe is usually the Canary Islands, Madeira or the Azores, after which there is nothing but the vast and wild ocean in front of the ship and its passengers for days on end - and pure relaxation: sleeping in late without missing a shore leave. Feast your way through the lunch menu in the main restaurant instead of queuing at the buffet. Finally reading all those thick tomes you never had time for at home. Or count wave crests from the balcony and keep an eye out for whale fountains ... And, most importantly: simply indulge in cultivated boredom without a guilty conscience.

For me, this is pure luxury - for which, by the way, you often only have to pay a ridiculously low price. Because most shipping companies don't even fill half of their ships on these crossings, they lure you in with prices that are almost as deep as the Atlantic off Newfoundland. It's easy to upgrade to a higher suite category or a ship in the absolute luxury class. My tip: If you are traveling from Europe to America, be sure to book a cabin on the port side - then you can watch the sun go down all day long - which can also be a wonderful on-board activity ...
