The centenarian who once boarded a ship ...

They still exist, the cruise stories that are not about getting bigger, more modern and more luxurious, but simply about all the wonderful people who breathe life into a cruise liner and turn a floating piece of steel into a home on the high seas.

My absolute favorite story currently focuses on John "Jack" Jenkins
a former bellboy for the long-established British shipping company Cunard. This November, he is celebrating his 100th(!) birthday - just like his former employer. And he has fond memories of John "Jack" and invited him on board the Queen Mary 2 as part of the upcoming anniversary! Has much changed since Jenkins' first voyage in 1934? "I still remember my first voyages on the MRS Mauretania, which were to the West Indies. As we didn't yet have loudspeaker announcements on board, I always had to walk across the deck with a bell after we arrived in port and shout "all guests ashore, all guests ashore". I guess those days are over," explains the still very seaworthy pensioner.

But let's be honest:
We can safely do without the old ship's bells today, but not without shipping companies like Cunard or people like Mr. Jenkins!
