I've just returned from a river cruise: a week on the Rhône and Saône. From Lyon to just before the Mediterranean and back again on the A-ROSA LUNA (by the way, there will be a detailed report in the next print edition of Connoisseur Circle).

Do you think that sounds like a "floating retirement home" and a "long, calm river"? Not at all! From kayaking in the Ardèche and mountain biking in Burgundy to horse riding in the Camargue, there was plenty of variety and sporting activities on offer. Then there were exciting cities like Arles and Avignon, picture-book villages like Viviers, and "animal-friendly" excursions like the poultry market in Louhans. And on the river itself, there was not only always something new to see, but also some pretty exciting things to experience: Mighty locks, low bridges, large freighters heading in the opposite direction ...

My conclusion after seven days of "City, Country, River": actually the perfect family and active vacation, but also quite suitable for younger singles and couples ...

Why is the age of the average river cruiser still 60 plus and why do most providers bob along at a fairly low rate? It is certainly not due to the offerings of such innovative shipping companies as A-ROSA that this form of vacation is not really taking off at the moment and is hardly attracting any new target groups.

But who would have thought 15 years ago that the high seas would be as busy as they are today? TUI has just announced the first "Electronic Dance Cruise" with DJ superstar Robin Schulz and "Gestört aber Geil" (!) on Mein Schiff 2. So maybe it won't be that long before the first youngsters check in for the Dub-auf-der-Donau- or Rock-auf dem-Rhein-Rivercruise ...
