Your home is the sea...

Let's be honest: have you ever seriously thought about what it would be like to live on a luxury liner?

Then firstly you are not alone and secondly you might even be quite a financial genius! If you believe a calculation by the British cruise specialist CruiseDeals.co.uk, 120 days traveling the world on board an upscale 4-star ship is around 1,500 euros cheaper than four months of everyday life in London! Discovering Mexico instead of paying rent or cruising the South Seas instead of queuing at the supermarket checkout is not only more fun, it also saves money! So it's no wonder that the American shipping company Princess Cruise alone has several hundred guests who have made their ship their main residence.

Which brings me to Beatrice Muller, who moved into her inside cabin on the legendary Queen Elizabeth 2 in 2000 and only gave it up again when the ship was sold to Dubai in 2008. Many years ago, I had the pleasure of meeting the then very sprightly woman in her mid-eighties on a transatlantic voyage from Southampton to New York. However, "Bingo-Bea" only had very little time for an interview back then - after all, her days on board were filled with bridge rounds, five-o'clock teas, dance lessons, painting classes and her beloved bingo afternoons. Between the cabin door and the ballroom, two questions did come up: What does she miss about being at sea; and what is the best thing about life on board, I wanted to know from her. "Trees and the fact that I can grab a dance partner here at any time, whereas in my old home only the vacuum cleaner was waiting for me," were her answers. It seems that this kind of "life on board forever" is actually quite bearable. Especially now that you know you can save a lot of money ....
