Brave new cruise world

The size of a coin, light as a feather and so pretty that you'll love wearing them on your wrist or around your neck:

With the new "Ocean Medallions", Carnival wants to replace the classic boarding pass in future and make cruising even more convenient. What at first sounds like a rather insignificant piece of cruise news, on closer inspection has a lot to offer - in the truest sense of the word: the small micro-chip inside the circular gadget not only opens the cabin door, but also orders burgers, beer and fries to the deck chair, locates the exact position of your children in the Kid's Club, books shore excursions and asks if you would like a bottle of champagne on the balcony of your cabin for the approaching sunset ... And because it's so practical, the smart little helper also quickly saves all passenger data so that it can be used for future bookings and travel recommendations.

Data protection? Privacy? Get it over the railing!
And that also seems to suit the passengers. So far, there have been no protests against this innovation, which is to be tested on the Regal Princess, part of the Carnival fleet, from November this year.
But Big Brother is not only monitoring us on American ships: MSC is also currently refitting and upgrading its entire fleet. "MSC for me" is the name of the technology that, thanks to facial recognition, GPS and radio technology, turns us into transparent passengers, follows us wherever we go and even provides us with personalized offers, including personalized wine recommendations. As free as the sea? It seems that these times on the high seas will soon be over. It's a shame that we passengers don't even seem to think this is worth a storm in a teacup ...
