Cast off with Hurtigruten
While most ocean shipping companies keep postponing the resumption of their cruises - and some have not even managed to get their crews safely back to their home countries - Hurtigruten is making people sit up and take notice.
On June 26, the Norwegians will start again - albeit with restrictions. However, these could mean the near future of cruises! The MS Fridtjof Nansen, which only entered service last December, has been re-routed to Hamburg for the new concept. From here, the 140-metre-long expedition ship will set off on 14-day voyages "heading for the Norwegian coast" until September. The not-so-small catch is that no shore leave is planned during the trips! Instead, the program includes "the circumnavigation of the Nordkapp" and "entries into the Geiranger and Trollfjord". And also "anchoring to watch the hustle and bustle on the bird cliffs from the deck". The only time you will leave the ship is on booked Zodiac and kayak excursions. But even then, there should always be a hand's breadth of water under the keel. Sightseeing tours, hikes or excursions into the mountains? Not (yet) ...
The focus is on time on board and encounters with the sea and fellow travelers. Sounds more retro than revolutionary - and somehow also quite wonderful ...
