Avocado toast in the rooftop lounge...
Admittedly, at 49 years old, I'm no longer the very youngest. But I'm still easily two decades younger than the average age on many a ship and I've never felt too old to cruise!
On the two new river ships "A" and "B" from "U by Uniworld" (as you can see, it's getting super-hip and crazy right now), it almost happened anyway. They actually wanted to introduce an age limit of 45 because they were of the opinion that millennials prefer to cruise among themselves and that silent discos, yoga classes and rooftop lounges are no longer for those born in 1973 and older.
Quite apart from the fact that such a regulation screams "age discrimination" and would probably not stand up in any court of law, it also shows the narrow-mindedness of product managers and marketing managers.
Because, yes, cruises are of course also something for younger people - but you don't get them on board by introducing an age limit and putting avocado toast on the breakfast menu, but by developing revolutionary new cruise concepts!
AIDA once showed how it's done (even if, admittedly, not much of the former verve and esprit can be felt today). And Richard Branson is currently seen as a potential successor with his first Virgin Voyages ship, which is due to set sail in 2020.
It's just as well that U by Uniworld realized a week before the first Danube voyage that the concept wasn't working: from now on, the two ships will be offered under the motto "for the young and young at heart".
