Airbus Update
Today some thoughts on the dynamic growth in civil aviation. In 1995, Boeing held the absolute lead in the global market share of commercial aircraft sales with 85 percent, whereas today Airbus is the leader with over 50 percent. The new Airbus CEO Fabrice Bregier explained to a crowd of aviation journalists from all over the world at the Airbus Innovation Days 2012 in Toulouse just how much the aircraft markets are continuing to change. "Whereas Europe and the USA once accounted for 80 percent of all orders, it is now 25 percent for the USA and 25 percent for Europe. The rest comes from Asia and above all from the Middle East, which has become decisive". Eleven percent of all orders on hand for 2012 come from the Middle East. 12 percent from Europe.
And John Leahy, Chief Operating Customer, Airbus' top aircraft salesman, has already discovered the next important market. "Africa. The continent is on the verge of rapid development. We see a situation there similar to what Latin America has experienced in the last 18 years," says Leahy. No fewer than five of the world's financially strongest airlines are based there. "And the changes in Latin America are similar to what Africa is experiencing now. If the economy on the black continent continues to develop, we will have the same market there in 15 years' time." Meanwhile, production at Airbus is running at full speed. The most important model, the Airbus A320, is currently producing 42 aircraft per month. Production of the wide-bodied Airbus A330 could be increased from 9.5 to eleven units per month, and the A380 to a rate of 2.5 per month. It is hoped that 570 or more aircraft will be delivered in 2012.
There are currently 74 of the largest commercial aircraft, the Airbus A380, in service, with one of these double-deckers taking off every eight minutes worldwide. These jets are primarily deployed to and from the world's 39 hubs, which handle more than 10,000 long-haul passengers every day. In 20 years, there will be 90 such hubs.
