Cathay Pacific Airways, based in Hong Kong, and the Lufthansa Group
based Cathay Pacific Airways and the Lufthansa Group.

Both airlines, each in a different airline alliance camp, namely Oneworld and Star Alliance, will thus improve connection options via Hong Kong to Australia and New Zealand. A cooperation that would have been unthinkable years ago, namely to cooperate with a "hostile" airline alliance partner. But the enormous competition is simply causing some bastions to fall.

The cooperation with Cathay Pacific includes Lufthansa, Swiss International Air Lines (Swiss) and Austrian Airlines (Austrian) from April 26, 2017, with scheduled flights from Frankfurt, Munich, Vienna and Zurich connecting in Hong Kong to Sydney, Melbourne, Cairns and Auckland. The entire connection can be booked end-to-end, baggage is checked through to the partner's entire route network and award miles can also be collected on the respective codeshare connections.

Cathay Pacific passengers can in turn use their Cathay Pacific flight number to reach fourteen different European Lufthansa, Swiss and Austrian destinations with their ticket, thus supplementing the existing Cathay Pacific flights to Frankfurt, Düsseldorf and Zurich.

Lufthansa has also recently entered into the following partnerships with non-alliance partners. Etihad Airways from Abu Dhabi and Air Astana
from Kazakhstan. Others are likely to follow.
