The other day, changing trains in Riga
Although more than half of the over 2 million Airbaltic passengers use the airport in the Lithuanian capital of Riga for transfers, the small, very modern and easy-to-use airport has somehow remained an insider tip.
Connoisseur Circle tests AirBaltic from Vienna via Riga to Helsinki, how the Riga hub works. Shortly after the punctual departure from Vienna on board an 18-year-old Boeing 737, which is gradually being replaced by the modern Bombardier CS300, a hot breakfast is served by a very courteous and friendly crew.
After one and a half hours, the flight lands punctually in Riga. A short transfer by bus to the terminal, less than two minutes' walk away is the Airbaltic lounge, with hot and cold drinks and a good selection of food, including hot dishes. On the upper floor of the lounge you have a better view and more sunshine as well as more peace and quiet. After waiting for just over an hour, it's less than a two-minute walk to the next gate. A Dash 8Q400 takes us to the capital of Finland in a short time - culinarily supplied with grilled salmon and French white wine.
After a stay in the elegant SAS lounge, we returned from Helsinki to Riga on a Boeing 737, again very punctually. On the 40-minute flight we had another nice breakfast - including fresh espresso.
This time we were also able to take a closer look at the new terminal in Riga. Here too, as at the entire airport, the atmosphere was very relaxed. The distances to the gates are not too long here either. Another positive thing we noticed was that the flight attendants were always in a good mood and very courteous, as were the staff in the lounge.
Conclusion: changing planes in Riga, staying in the comfortable lounge and a Business Class service that is in no way inferior to other major airlines on inner-European routes are worth recommending AirBaltic.
