The Polish airline LOT is the first European airline to take delivery of the Boeing 787. This gives the airline an urgently needed improvement in comfort on long-haul routes. With its Boeing 767-300ERs and an outdated Business Class, the Polish airline is no longer competitive. Connoisseur Circle accompanied one of the first 787 test flights on the Vienna - Warsaw route. The modern design of the "Dreamliner", the state-of-the-art engines, the lightweight composite materials and the reduced noise level definitely make for more pleasant conditions on board. LOT has ordered a total of eight Boeing 787s, which will be deployed on long-haul routes from January 2013.

There
are three service classes on board. Business class, with eighteen seats that can be adjusted to a fully horizontal reclining position. These are absolutely convincing in terms of comfort. The color coordination of the seats and carpets may be a matter of taste, but the seat offers more comfort than the new Lufthansa Business Class seat in direct comparison. A new Premium Economy Class with 21 comfortable armchairs has also been installed. The classic Economy Class comprises 213 seats. Each passenger has their own screen. This in-flight entertainment system offers state-of-the-art audio and video equipment. Specially trained staff will also help LOT to position itself better on long-haul routes. It will be interesting to see what LOT's catering will look like in future. At Christmas 2013, the Austrian luxury caterer Do&Co took over 100% of LOT's catering department. A culinary upgrade is certain.

LOT
has decided to refresh the previous livery of its aircraft. The new livery is not intended to be a break with tradition, but rather a draft of the national airline's 80-year history, combined with a modern design. On the Boeing 787, however, the refreshed outfit does not look very modern. The flight attendants' uniforms could also have done with a refresh.
But that is also a matter of taste. In addition, such things cost a lot of money. And since LOT is in an extremely difficult economic situation, some things simply cannot be financed. The Boeing 787 therefore has a twofold significance for LOT: not only as a quantum leap in terms of travel comfort, but also in terms of economic efficiency.
In addition, a new aircraft demonstrably increases staff motivation. By the way: changing planes at Warsaw Airport is quick, clear and very pleasant. LOT Polish Airlines has also set up a very tasteful Business Class Lounge at its home airport in Warsaw.
