AUSTRALIA - EUROPE NONSTOP
Qantas CEO Alan Joyce said in an exclusive interview with Connoisseur Circle on the sidelines of a conference in Helsinki that non-stop flights from Perth, in Western Australia, to London are planned.
Qantas has recently confirmed orders for eight Boeing 787-9 aircraft worth around 2 billion US dollars, which will be delivered from 2017. "The 787-9 will enable us to launch a direct service from Australia to Europe for the first time. But we won't be doing this immediately with the first 787s. These aircraft will first replace our last Boeing 747 jumbos, then we'll take a close look at non-stop service to Europe."
"We currently have the youngest fleet in more than 20 years, with an average age of just 7.7 years."
However, he also said that the strategic cooperation with Dubai-based Emirates Airline is developing very well: "Teams from both airlines are working on further opportunities to expand this cooperation."
"We would also like to see Emirates fly to even more Australian destinations from Dubai". For example, Emirates is planning non-stop flights to Darwin, Cairns, Broome and Alice Springs. In addition, the world's largest commercial aircraft, the Airbus A380, will be increasingly deployed on existing routes.
"We, at Qantas, also have very big growth opportunities in Asia and North America, which will be our continued focus," says Joyce. This year alone, the Australian airline is growing by six percent on its international routes. "All of this will be achieved by increasing the utilization of our existing fleet," says Alan Joyce.
