People's ViennaLine
Since March 28, People's ViennaLine (PE), founded by Vorarlberg entrepreneur Markus Kopf, has been flying three times a day from Altenrhein to Vienna. "I am delighted that it has worked and that the airline has been established within six months," Kopf told Connoisseur Circle. From today's perspective, he could not say when PE would turn a profit. Austrian Airlines (AUA), which has been flying the route three times a day since 2001, is known to have had its handling contracts in Altenrhein terminated, but is insisting that its contract, which runs until 2015, be honored. "Two airlines cannot operate at full capacity between Altenrhein and Vienna, no one has a break-even point. AUA still has time until 2015, then it's over. We can hold out," believes Moser, although PE is currently only operating at 30 percent capacity. And yet Kopf remains open to a partnership with AUA. "92 percent of all passengers have Vienna as their final destination, a partner could bring another eight percent more." All PE captains are former AUA pilots. "We are definitely going for four daily Vienna flights", says Kopf. There is spare capacity on the Embraer 170 in use: "It would be fun to operate a second jet. But we can't fill it from Altenrhein alone," says Kopf. In the meantime, frequencies have been reduced to two per day during the summer months due to low capacity utilization. Kopf rules out a larger Embraer 190 anyway. It would have too much capacity and would also be more expensive to operate due to higher charges. Incidentally, the IATA code PE was previously used by the US low-cost airline People Express, which was founded in 1981. It ceased to exist in 1987 due to over-indebtedness and was taken over by Continental Airlines.
