DO & CO á la carte menus for Economy Class passengers
The cost pressure on airlines has led to enormous service reductions, especially for Economy Class passengers in Europe. The days when free food was served in this class on intra-European flights are long gone for classic airlines such as Austrian Airlines, Lufthansa or Air France - if you don't count snacks or a chocolate bar. By the way, bosses of
airlines such as Turkish Airlines, Emirates Airline or China Airlines emphasize to Connoisseur Circle that they would never cut back on service at the expense of passengers. Their idea of service is more pronounced than in conservative Central Europe. What Austrian Airlines saves in its award-winning Business Class on long-haul flights by replacing the service course Amuse Gueule with cheap peanuts should not be questioned further here.
After all, Austrian Airlines has been offering passengers on European and long-haul flights from Vienna and New York the opportunity to purchase freshly prepared 3-course meals from DO & CO in Economy Class for some time now - in addition to the free catering (or none at all) offered on some routes, depending on the duration of the flight. The á la carte catering concept is intended to provide Economy passengers with a better culinary offering and a greater variety of food on board.
How it works: Anyone who books online at www.austrian.comcan order the 3-course menu in addition. If you are still undecided at the time of booking, you can order the menu up to 36 hours before departure. In Vienna, spontaneous passengers have the option of ordering their menu directly at the DO & CO à la carte desk in the Austrian Star Alliance Terminal up to one hour before departure. Several hundred passengers a day currently make use of this service. The à la carte catering can also be booked online as a surprise gift for a third party using the booking code.
There are different menus to choose from: For example, there is a baked chicken schnitzel with cucumber and potato salad with DO & CO's chocolate mousse. Or herbed country chicken breast on Caesar's salad with wild salmon tartare and a strawberry tart. If you prefer Asian food, simply choose the bento box with edamame, sushi mix, avocado salmon tartare with ponzu yusu dressing, duck masao, sakura salad, soy sauce and DO & CO's chocolate mousse. There are also special children's menus and breakfast menus with jam, butter, croissant, freshly baked bread and fresh orange juice, as well as variations ranging from classic to hearty with fried bacon and fried egg.
Do&Co á la carte costs just 15 euros per menu. Considering the price of a coffee and mineral water at Vienna Airport, this is a really good value offer. It is to be expected that more airlines in Europe will introduce such additional offers. Swiss International Air Lines is currently examining individual catering options for passengers.
