Salzburg Airport examines new flight connections - Madrid from winter flight schedule

It must be clearly stated that the major airlines such as Lufthansa, Air Berlin, Swiss and Austrian Airlines are implementing massive cost-cutting programs and are doing the opposite rather than adding new routes. It is therefore all the more remarkable that Salzburg remains the only Austrian regional airport in Air Berlin's network. The grouping resulting from the takeover of Contact Air from OLT Express is also very interesting. Salzburg is clearly also being considered for point-to-point traffic. Be it to Paris, Amsterdam, Zurich, Barcelona or Warsaw if possible. But Austria's provincial airports are feeling the effects of falling demand.

"Our
main goal today is therefore to retain the existing airlines. This makes it all the more noteworthy when Air Berlin, for example, expands its Düsseldorf connections and sets up a night stop in Salzburg. In addition, Air Berlin is increasingly connecting us to the hubs of the Oneworld alliance, including British Airways," explains Airport Director Roland Herrmann.

From
the winter flight schedule, there will be two weekly flights to Madrid with Iberia (subject to approval, note). Lufthansa is also planning flights from Berlin to Salzburg. The fact that British Airways, for example, is adding two additional frequencies to London for the coming winter timetable means 40% more seats on this route. "We may reach two million passengers at Salzburg Airport in five years. We can also handle 2.5 million passengers in the current terminal, but not optimally. Our business is based on a four-pillar model: charter incoming and outgoing. Low-cost airlines and scheduled services. The low-cost airlines, such as Ryanair, are somewhat in retreat. Quality traffic to the hubs, such as Frankfurt, Vienna etc., is becoming increasingly important.

Salzburg
is known worldwide. In winter, supply and demand to the destination are therefore unbeatable. Next winter, for example, three Russian Transaero jumbo jets have been booked to bring winter vacationers from Moscow. There are also plans to expand the passenger terminal. "We are fully evaluating how we can improve our quality, but expanding capacity is not under discussion here. For example, renovating the existing terminal area or building new ones. Above all, more space will be needed for security checks in the future. Our evaluation plan will probably be ready in the fall. Energy supply will be a particular challenge. Here we want to rely more on natural gas, solar energy, etc.," says Herrmann.
