Eurowings opens base in Palma
Eurowings has opened its first base outside the German-speaking region in Palma de Mallorca.
The Lufthansa low-cost subsidiary plans to become the largest airline on the island. "Eurowings is the fastest growing airline in Europe. In 2013 we had 32 aircraft, now we have 110, so the integration of 30 leased Airberlin aircraft into Eurowings, including their crews, within eight weeks was a tour de force," CCO Oliver Wagner explains to Connoisseur Circle on board a Eurowings Europe A320 registered in Austria.
Up to 300 weekly flights will be operated to Mallorca from 23 destinations in Germany, Switzerland and from the Austrian airports of Vienna, Linz, Salzburg, Graz and Innsbruck. Four Airbus A320s will be stationed in Palma, next year there will be six. The plan is to operate 6,000 flights a year from the Palma base, with one million passengers expected in the first year.
Eurowings will soon be operating 160 aircraft. "Incidentally, we are now the second largest airline in Germany, ahead of Airberlin," says CCO Oliver Wagner.
Eurowings transports around one and a half to two million passengers per year from Austria and it is not impossible that even more aircraft will be stationed in Vienna in the future. Two more aircraft could join the fleet in 2018. This summer, the Airbus A320 used in Salzburg will be replaced by a smaller A319. Eurowings has been established in Vienna for around a year with Eurowings Europe and, Wagner is proud to say, this base has the best customer ratings of all Eurowings stations. Probably also a fact of Austrian charm...
