Shenzhen Airlines - new member of the Star Alliance
The Chinese airline Shenzhen Airlines officially joined the airline alliance Star Alliance on December 3. China's fifth-largest airline may be relatively unknown in our part of the world, but for Star Alliance this is a necessary upgrade in order to be better represented in the important Chinese market.
It took 16 months of extensive work to fulfill the strict requirements as a future alliance member. Shenzhen is the second alliance member in China alongside Air China. Shenzhen Airlines will add around 400 daily flights to 70 destinations to the Star Alliance. The airline has expanded the Shenzhen and Guangzhou metropolitan areas as hubs. In future, Star Alliance travelers will benefit from better connecting flights within China, especially to Shanghai.
Globally, the 27 Star Alliance members, including Lufthansa and Austrian Airlines, operate 21,900 daily flights to 1,329 destinations in 194 countries.
Shenzhen Airlines surprises in many respects. Above all because of its motivated staff.
Many young people want to be part of the airline's enormous growth and are highly committed to their work. In order to cope with the enormous expansion, Shenzhen has hired the most foreign pilots of all Chinese airlines. The fleet comprises 116 medium-haul jets from the Boeing 737 Next Generation, Airbus A320 and A319 series. By the end of 2015, the fleet is expected to comprise 170 aircraft, with the main focus on increasing the frequency of existing routes.
As the next member of Star Alliance, Taiwan's EVA Air will officially join in the middle of the year. EVA Air will further enhance the Alliance's position in China. The airline serves over 20 destinations in China from Taiwan.
