EVA AIR accepted as a future Star Alliance member
The private Taiwanese airline EVA AIR is to become a Star Alliance member. The members of the airline alliance unanimously accepted EVA AIR's application. The decision underlines Star Alliance's long-term strategy of constantly expanding the network and opening up new regions with strong economic potential and good development.
"EVA AIR is a good fit for Star Alliance as the airline will add many new routes to our global network, especially with a focus on the growing Far East market. This will increase choice for our customers and fulfill our mission as the leading global airline alliance for the international customer," said Mark Schwab, CEO Star Alliance. Since the network's inception nearly 15 years ago, Star Alliance has expanded its presence in the Asia-Pacific region, with eight member airlines operating in the region by mid-2013. "The result of our careful analysis was that Star Alliance is the best fit for EVA AIR. Our route networks complement each other and we will expand Star Alliance's existing flight options in the growing market from Taiwan. We look forward to realizing significant synergies, both in terms of improving our services and expanding our customer base. In addition, Star Alliance is particularly attractive to us because of our partnership with Air China," said James Jeng, EVA AIR Chairman.
The integration process is expected to take one year. The respective teams at EVA AIR and Star Alliance will begin the necessary steps for a new airline to join the Star Alliance network. Air China will support the process as a "mentor airline". EVA AIR's route network covers more than 60 destinations. The then 30 Star Alliance airlines (26 current and four future members) will offer over 22,000 daily flights and serve 1,345 destinations in 191 countries. EVA Airways was founded in 1989 as Taiwan's first private international airline. The company is a subsidiary of the Evergreen Group and sister company of Evergreen Line with the world's leading fleet of container ships. The airline's fleet currently comprises 59 aircraft. In Europe, the airline serves Vienna, Paris, Amsterdam and London Heathrow.
