EVA Air now a member of the Star Alliance
The private Taiwanese airline EVA Air has been a member of Star Alliance since June 18. This expands the alliance's presence in the Asia-Pacific region. In future, EVA Air passengers will be able to check through to their final destination on connecting flights with other Star Alliance members. This means that passengers no longer have to collect their boarding passes for connecting flights at the transfer airport and, subject to local customs restrictions, baggage will also be booked directly through to the destination airport.
Star Alliance now comprises 28 airlines offering more than 21,900 daily flights to 1,328 destinations in 195 countries. In addition to the introduction of the new destinations Kaohsiung in Taiwan and Surabaya in Indonesia, EVA Air is expanding its presence in the important network traffic between China and Taiwan. Its passenger volume has grown from just over three million in 2009 to around nine million in 2012.
As Taiwan has the shortest average distance to all major cities in the Asia-Pacific region due to its geographical location, Taoyuan International Airport in Taiwan is an important regional hub. Star Alliance now has a total of 10 hubs in the Asia Pacific region: Tokyo - Narita and Haneda, Seoul - Incheon, Beijing, Shanghai - Pudong, Taipei - Taoyuan, Shenzhen, Bangkok, Singapore and Auckland.
In Europe, EVA Air serves Paris, London, Amsterdam and Vienna, which was the first overseas destination in its young history. From September, EVA Air will be serving Taipei - Bangkok - Vienna four times a week instead of three. With the imminent opening of the Thai Airways Bangkok - Vienna route, 14 weekly flights between the two cities are on the program together with Austrian Airlines. All three airlines are members of the Star Alliance. "We want to coordinate the flights so that EVA Air and Thai each fly on days when the other partner is not operating. In cooperation with our daily flight to Bangkok, this results in a well-rounded program," Austrian Airlines CEO Jaan Albrecht told Connoisseur Circle in Taipei.
