The global alliance has opened a new lounge in Rome. Connoisseur Circle was there exclusively to see the beauty of this lounge for itself.

Star Alliance continues to open its own lounges in key markets where no partner airline has a main hub. The global airline alliance opened its seventh branded lounge at Rome Fiumicino Airport on June 28.

Christian Draeger, Star Alliance VP Customer Experiences. "Premium lounges are one of our main goals. We are not competing with airlines like Lufthansa in Frankfurt or United in Chicago, where these Star Alliance partner airlines operate their large lounges," he told Conncoisseur Circle on the sidelines of the opening ceremony in Rome.

A total of 17 of the 28 Star Alliance member airlines fly to Rome, offering flights to 25 destinations in 20 countries.

"This Star Alliance Lounge is a €1.2 million investment for us as an Avia partner," said Paul Whelan, Non-Executive Director of Aviapartner. Aviapartner is a European ground handling, lounge and VIP services group.

"Our 8th Star Alliance Lounge is expected to open in Amsterdam (Netherlands) in January 2019. We are also renovating our lounges in Paris Charles de Gaulle (France) and Nagoya (Japan), which should be completed by the end of this year," said Draeger.

"I can imagine a double-digit number of special Star Alliance lounges worldwide. But we need a critical mass of passengers for this investment to make sense".

He added that 2 to 2.5 million passengers a year used the six Star Alliance lounges worldwide.

The Rome lounge is located on the upper level of Boarding Zone D in Terminal 3 and provides access to the departure gates for Alliance airlines' flights to European destinations in the Schengen zone. The lounge offers space for around 130 guests.

The Star Alliance has its own lounges in Buenos Aires (Argentina), Los Angeles (USA, California), Nagoya (Japan), Paris (France), Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), Rome (Italy) and São Paulo (Brazil).

The network of 28 Star Alliance members currently offers more than 18,800 daily flights to 1,317 airports in 193 countries.
