Admittedly, the airlines Copa from Panama, Avianca and TACA Airlines - an airline group from Colombia, El Salvador and Peru - are not (yet) among the best-known companies here in Europe. This is a shame, as both are among the world's financially strongest airlines and also offer high service standards. However, on June 22, Star Alliance added Avianca, TACA Airlines and Copa Airlines to the airline alliance. Star Alliance is thus consolidating its presence in Latin America and adding almost 50 new airports to its network.

"With
Avianca, TACA Airlines and Copa Airlines, our customers will now benefit from a higher number of connection options thanks to the connection to five new Star Alliance hubs in the center of the American continent," says Star Alliance CEO Mark Schwab. The Copa Airlines hubs in Panama City (Panama) and Bogota (Colombia) as well as the Avianca, TACA Airlines hubs in Bogota (Colombia), San Salvador (El Salvador), Lima (Peru) and San Jose (Costa Rica) will be added. Avianca, TACA Airlines serve more than 100 destinations worldwide and operate a fleet of more than 150 short, medium and long-haul aircraft. The airline group directly employs over 17,000 people. Avianca and TACA Airlines, each of which consolidated various small Latin American airlines, agreed on a strategic merger in 2009. This resulted in a combined route network with a focus on North, Central and South America, the Caribbean and European cities. TACA began negotiations for Star Alliance membership in 2008 and the two airlines of Copa Holding - Copa Airlines and Copa Airlines Colombia - fly to 64 destinations in 29 countries. The group recently strengthened its presence in Colombia by renaming Aero Republica to Copa Airlines Columbia. Copa Airlines' "Americas" hub at Tocumen International Airport in Panama City/Panama is considered the most important hub in Latin America, with main routes to the Caribbean and Central and South America.

The
Star Alliance network thus comprises 27 members, which together offer more than 21,500 daily flights to 1,356 airports in 193 countries. Our tip: When traveling to Latin America, we highly recommend Panama Airport as a hub between North and South America. It offers really good quality, as does the airline Copa. And Avianca TACA also scores with reliability and a really good product. Civil aviation is undergoing a very positive change, especially in South America. The new members of the Star Alliance are proof of this.
