Brexit casts its shadow and in Austria EasyJet becomes the country's largest airline.

The carrier has placed its EU AOC (Air Operator Certificate) in Vienna, founded EasyJet Europe and will re-register 110 aircraft. A look at the statistics shows just how important an EU AOC is for EasyJet: 50 percent of the approximately 75 million EasyJet passengers per year are accounted for by traffic to and from EU countries, which the airline would no longer be able to handle as a future non-EU airline due to Brexit. This step was necessary to ensure that EasyJet can and will continue to offer low-cost flights within the EU in the future. Connoisseur Circle spoke about this with EasyJet CEO Carolyn McCall.

Congratulations! With 110 Airbus aircraft registered in Austria, EasyJet will become the largest airline in the country.
McCall: We chose the right country! Part of our decision was that Austro Control follows very strict safety rules. They do a good job and we attach great importance to that. But establishing an AOC in another country is more difficult than opening a base somewhere where you have to focus on commercial decisions etc.

The first aircraft with Austrian registration landed on July 20. What happens now?
We won't be re-registering another aircraft before October. It takes about one and a half days per aircraft to receive the Austrian registration. We will allow two winter seasons for this, everything has to be done before England leaves the EU. Even if there is perhaps a solution between the EU and England, we will keep the Austrian AOC. The biggest challenge for EasyJet Europe is to carry out this implementation mode of re-registration efficiently.

EasyJet has been flying to Austria for 11 years, carrying around one million passengers a year, and now aircraft are being registered here. When will Vienna become a base?
We have 28 bases, eleven of which are in England. Vienna has always been an interesting destination for us. So it is not unlikely that Vienna will one day become an eaysjet base.
