The new beginning of Malaysia Airlines

Malaysia Airlines is moving forward after a difficult past. The strict restructuring plan is being implemented faster than expected, explains the new CEO of Malaysia Airlines, Peter Bellew, in an interview with Connoisseur Circle.

"In some areas, we are six to nine months ahead of our planned targets, but we are now working hard to maximize our revenues. Malaysia Airlines has not been aggressive enough to do more business on the commercial side."

Remember, Malaysia Airlines was hit by two fatal airplane disasters. First, the disappearance of a Boeing 777, flight MH370, which has been missing for more than two years. And the shooting down of another Boeing 777 over the Ukraine. With such a catastrophic burden, a restart of the airline was an absolute necessity. And it seems to have succeeded. Restructuring, downsizing and many cost-cutting measures have been introduced and have transformed the airline's image. Staff morale has improved massively and the airline has become competitive again. "And the fact that we have ordered up to 50 new Boeing 737MAXs shows that Malaysia Airlines is on the road to the future.

Bellew is CEO and Group Managing Director as of July 1. He was previously Director of Operations at Irish low-cost carrier Ryanair and joined Malaysia Airlines in August 2015. Malaysia Airlines is a member of the oneworld alliance, with partners including British Airways and Airberlin, and plans to increasingly use Kuala Lumpur as a hub. "Our home airport offers enormous growth potential. There are no capacity restrictions here, three runways and 24-hour operations. This is more attractive than congested hubs such as Hong Kong or Bangkok."

Malaysia Airlines will also replace its six Airbus A380s, the largest commercial aircraft in the world, with small Airbus A350s, which will primarily serve London in Europe. Connoisseur Circle will visit the airline in Kuala Lumpur next fall to see the reported service improvements for itself.
