London City Airport (LCY)
Even though London has four considerable international airports - Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted and Luton - it is sometimes difficult to fly from one of them. Be it because of the journey - too far away from the city, such as Luton Airport, which is dominated by low-cost airlines - or simply operating at the limits of its capacity (Heathrow, for example).
Numerous European airlines also fly to London City (LCY). The advantage: thanks to the manageable infrastructure, you are quickly on your way to the center of London. For example, Canary Wharf is just ten minutes away, the business district in London City is 20 minutes away and the West End is 35 minutes away. There are also connections to the public transport network. The Dockland Light Rail System runs automatically and therefore without a train driver and is therefore not susceptible to line congestion. Definitely an aspect worth mentioning... With around three million passengers a year, and annual increases, LCY only has a market share of around six percent among London's airports. But that's a good thing. In the competition of all five international airports, LCY is the one with the fastest processing times. 41 destinations in Europe are offered from LCY, but there are also twice-daily flights to New York with a British Airways Airbus A318. With a stopover on the outbound flight in Shannon, Ireland. The refueling stop is necessary due to the runway restrictions in LCY. However, Shannon is used as a US entry point while refueling, saving time on arrival in New York. In addition to daily connections such as to Zurich, Geneva and Frankfurt, there is unfortunately no longer a connection to Vienna. Austrian Airlines once served LCY twice daily. But the approach to LCY remains special. Both pilots and aircraft must meet special requirements for this operation.
