There's no question that being permanently online is a basic
basic requirement.

And this expectation is increasingly shared by air passengers. In a survey of 10,000 passengers, Inmarsat, a producer of satellites that provide Internet connections to airplanes, found that 82% of respondents made their choice of airline dependent on whether or not Internet was available on board an aircraft.

The Lufthansa Group has declared 2017 the "Year of Digitalization at Lufthansa", said Chairman and CEO Carsten Spohr on 10 January. As a first step, the company has launched the next test phase of Lufthansa FlyNet internet access, initially on five Lufthansa Airbus A320s and five A320s at Austrian Airlines. A full market launch is planned for the first quarter of 2017. Lufthansa's long-haul fleet already offers Internet access

Passengers flying on these aircraft will be offered free internet access during this test phase. Lufthansa passengers will be able to use their own mobile devices to access the internet via Wi-Fi. At a later date, three service packages will be available, namely FlyNet Message for 3, FlyNet Surf, 7 and FlyNet
Stream12.

During a test flight on board an Airbus A319, Connoisseur Circle was able to see for itself that the quality of the Wi-Fi connection was in no way inferior to that on the ground, and that streaming movies also worked perfectly.

Lufthansa Executive Board member Harry Hohmeister told Connoisseur Circle that Lufthansa is investing 300 million euros in digitalization for its customers by 2020.

In the first quarter of 2017, the number of Lufthansa aircraft equipped with internet access that will be used within Europe will increase to around 20. The entire Lufthansa A320 fleet is to be equipped with the latest technology by mid-2018. By spring, almost 100 aircraft will be equipped with the necessary antennas and routers.

All 31 Austrian Airlines Airbus A320 aircraft are to be equipped by the end of April 2017. In addition, a total of 69 Eurowings aircraft will also be equipped with these systems by summer 2017.
