Boeing
After a series of setbacks, Boeing started deliveries of the 787 program on 25 September almost three and a half years later than originally planned. The confusion in production and penalties due to the delay have made the development of the "Dreamliner" enormously more expensive. Six billion dollars had been budgeted, but it is said to have ended up costing 15 billion. US newspapers estimate the total cost of the project at 32 billion dollars. The 787 is said to require 20 percent less fuel than comparable jets. The fuselage and wings are no longer made of aluminum, but of carbon fiber.
Premier customer All Nippon Airways (ANA) has now taken delivery of the first 787 at the Boeing site in Everett (Washington State). From November 1, a 264-seater aircraft will be used on the domestic routes Tokyo Haneda - Okayama and Tokyo Haneda - Hiroshima. But before that, there will be a special flight from Tokyo to Hong Kong on October 26 and back on October 27. Connoisseur Circle will be one of the first media outlets to be present on these extraordinary flights and will report exclusively on them. In December, the first international route will be Tokyo - Beijing, followed in January by three flights a week with 787s between Tokyo-Haneda and Frankfurt.
ANA ordered the 787 in 2004 as a launch customer. Over the next few years, the airline will receive 40 of the 787-8 series and fifteen of the larger model
787-9 model. Boeing is scheduled to deliver twelve 787-8s to ANA by March 31, 2012.
