With the new SWISS CS100 to London City
SWISS has become the world's first airline to commence scheduled services to London City with a Bombardier CS100.
This means that the city airport of the English financial metropolis is served by the most modern short and medium-haul aircraft.
Since August 8, the Zurich-London City route has also been served by the CS100. Flights from Geneva will follow from summer 2018. The statistics illustrate just how important this city airport is for SWISS. 24 percent of all passengers that the Swiss airline transports to and from the UK do so via London City.
As practical as this airport is not only for business travelers thanks to its proximity to London City, it is just as exciting for pilots. Due to the demanding landing approach (known as a steep approach) and the short runway, London City Airport places increased demands on pilots. They therefore have to undergo additional training. "SWISS has meticulously prepared its pilots for scheduled CSeries operations to London City," Peter Koch, Head of Fleet CSeries at SWISS, told Connoisseur Circle.
As well as the additional pilot training, the aircraft must also be certified for the steep landing approach in London City. "Landing in London City is like landing on an aircraft carrier for us. We currently have 10,000 flight hours of experience with the Bombardier CSeries. Eight of our training pilots are already trained for London City, and 30 more pilots will follow," explains Koch.
SWISS flies up to five times daily from Zurich to London City and twice daily from Geneva.
We have already reported on the modern Bombardier CS100 and CS300 aircraft several times at Connoisseur Circle.
