Emirates Airline took delivery of its 100th Airbus A380 at a ceremony in Hamburg Finkenwerder on November 3 and remains the world's largest operator of this aircraft type.

The Dubai-based airline received its 100th aircraft in less than ten years when it put the first A380 into service on July 28, 2008. Since then, 86 million passengers have flown on board an Emirates A380.

"When we delivered the first A380, none of us dreamed that we would one day hand over 100 of them to Emirates. In 2008, Airbus had a total order backlog of 58 A380s," explained Airbus CEO Tom Enders. Emirates has ordered a further 42 A380s. "We are continuing to work on the A380 because there is still a lot of upgrade potential for this aircraft," said Enders. Emirates Chairman Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum said, "We operate the largest A380 route network of any airline, to 48 cities in total. And we will continue to open new routes around the world." Al Maktoum added that the A380 has been hugely successful for the airline's development. "Because we needed the aircraft for our rapid expansion. We are using it as a flagship and we believe that the aircraft is the most suitable for us. That is why we have ordered so many A380s".

Al Maktoum also explained that Emirates uses the A380 on short routes such as Dubai-Kuwait (851 kilometers) as well as on ultra-long non-stop flights, for example from Dubai to Auckland, New Zealand (14,193 kilometers). Connoisseur Circle recently tested First Class on board an Emirates Airbus A380 exclusively and will report on this in the magazine.
