On the road with the Federal President
The Federal President flies with Eurowings to Rome for an official state visit.
Connoisseur Circle met Austria's head of state Alexander van der Bellen on board a Eurowings flight from Rome to Vienna. Is this a coincidence? Or because Austrian Airlines no longer flies this route or to send a signal that the President is saving costs when traveling? The choice of means of transportation is based on various criteria, such as time, cost and safety. If possible, a direct connection is chosen. This was the case with the flight to Rome. If there is a choice between car or train, the President of the Swiss Confederation prefers the train, Connoisseur Circle learns on board the Airbus A320. The fact that some countries such as Switzerland or Slovakia have their own government jets for such occasions is of no interest in Austria. The question of a
government jet does not currently arise in Austria. We also learn that the Federal President has many appointments abroad, most of which take place by plane. Most recently, however, he traveled by ship, the Twin-City Liner, on a state visit to Bratislava. We would like to know how long in advance a flight trip is normally planned in order to meet all the organizational requirements: The planning of trips abroad is done on a long-term basis, i.e. a date is found approximately six months to two years in advance. If possible, the flight itself is planned 3-4 months in advance for overseas trips and approx. 4-8 weeks in advance for trips within Europe, explains Reinhard Pickl-Herk, spokesman for the Federal President. The fact remains that when the Federal President travels abroad, Austrian Airlines is preferred, with direct connections being an important criterion. Incidentally, in addition to the Federal President and his wife, the entourage included a further six people on board the Airbus A320. The service was the same as for all passengers traveling in Eurowings' "Best" Class.
