Safety in African aviation has not only improved, this development is a fantastic success for all countries south of the Sahara, the Director General and CEO of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), Alexandre de Juniac, told Connoisseur Circle on the occasion of Aviation Day in Mauritius.

In 2017, airlines in the Sub-Saharan region did not have a single total loss of a commercial aircraft, no fatal accidents - with jets or turboprops - for the second year in a row. "This is probably the greatest success on the planet (in terms of improving air safety, ed.)," said de Juniac. Although there has been an increase in accidents involving turboprops, the trend is encouraging.

34 African airlines are also members of the IATA safety standard program, IOSA Operational Safety Audit. "We are convinced that the level of safety for IOSA member airlines is much better than for those that have not implemented it. We also call on governments to adopt IOSA in their aviation regulations. This is a standard that many countries outside Africa are already doing," says de Juniac.

And: "There are more than 100 airlines in Africa", explains AFRAA Secretary General of the African Airlines Association, Abdérahmane Berthé. The improvement in the safety rate is pleasing, but there is still a lot to do to make it even better. In addition, there are far too many small airlines.

De Juniac, who describes himself as "an optimist for Africa", predicts strong, dynamic demand for air traffic on the continent over the next five to ten years. On the one hand because of economic growth, but also the rise of the middle class in many countries, which can afford to travel by plane. "But there are major obstacles: The cost is incredibly high, for fuel, wages, etc., which puts pressure on the development of airlines," says de Juniac. But infrastructure problems are also more serious in Africa than in other parts of the world.
